1. Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the Sent News website, newsletter signup forms, referral links, and emails we send. It does not govern third-party websites or services that you choose to visit from a Sent News link.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Newsletter information: your email address, consent, signup time, signup location, subscription status, and any referral associated with your signup.
- Communications: information you include if you reply to an email or otherwise contact us.
Website, analytics, and security information
- Our hosting and security systems process ordinary request data such as IP address, browser or device information, requested URL, referring page, and request time. Sent News derives pseudonymous hashes from limited request signals for short-lived abuse and rate-limit protection rather than storing raw IP addresses in its application database.
- We use Plausible Analytics to understand aggregate traffic and actions such as newsletter signups, referral visits, article shares, and related-story clicks. Plausible does not use cookies or persistent cross-site identifiers. We do not send names, email addresses, subscriber IDs, or authentication identifiers to Plausible.
- Analytics may include the page visited, referring source, campaign parameters, general location derived from an IP address, browser, operating system, device category, and bounded event properties such as an article slug or referral code.
Article social media and video embeds
Articles may include public posts or videos from Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, or Vimeo. Opening an article that contains one of these embeds automatically connects your browser to that provider. The provider receives the request, device, and network information needed to respond, such as your IP address, browser or device information, and the article page URL (including its query parameters), and may read or set cookies under its own privacy policy. A fallback link to the item on the provider remains available.
Where applicable, Sent News requests X embeds with dnt=true, uses YouTube's privacy-enhancedyoutube-nocookie.com domain, and requests Vimeo embeds withdnt=1. Those settings limit certain provider personalization or tracking; they do not prevent the request to the provider or guarantee that no cookies are used.
Referral and device storage
- If you follow a Sent News referral link, we record the referral code, a random click identifier, the local landing page, bounded UTM campaign parameters, and the time of the visit. We set a first-party, HTTP-only referral cookie containing the code and click identifier for seven days so a later signup can be credited to the referrer.
- If you choose a light, dark, or system color theme, that preference is stored locally in your browser until you change it or clear browser storage.
Email delivery and engagement
Our email provider, Resend, processes subscriber and delivery information. This can include provider contact identifiers and events showing whether a message was sent, delivered, opened, clicked, bounced, complained about, suppressed, or unsubscribed. We use this information to operate the newsletter, understand engagement, troubleshoot delivery, and protect sender reputation.
Newsletter messages may also load images from Sent News storage or from YouTube/Google. When your email client loads a remote image, the server hosting that image receives the ordinary network information needed to deliver it. Following a YouTube link takes you to a service governed by Google's own terms and privacy practices.
3. How we use information
We use information to:
- provide and improve the website and newsletter;
- send emails you asked to receive and process unsubscribes;
- attribute referral visits and subscriber conversions;
- measure aggregate readership and content performance;
- detect abuse, enforce rate limits, secure our systems, and debug failures;
- maintain suppression and compliance records; and
- comply with law and protect our rights, readers, and services.
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on your consent to send marketing email, our legitimate interests in operating and securing Sent News and understanding aggregate readership, and compliance with legal obligations. You may withdraw newsletter consent at any time by unsubscribing.
4. How we disclose information
We disclose information only as reasonably necessary to operate Sent News, including to:
- Resend for subscriber management, email delivery, engagement events, unsubscribes, bounces, complaints, and suppressions;
- Supabase for database, storage, and server-side functions;
- Render for website hosting and application infrastructure;
- Plausible for privacy-focused website analytics;
- Instagram, TikTok, X, Google/YouTube, and Vimeo when you choose to open an article containing their embedded content or follow its fallback link, and Google/YouTube for video metadata and some newsletter video thumbnails; and
- professional advisers, authorities, or another party when required by law, needed to protect rights and safety, or involved in a merger, financing, reorganization, or sale of all or part of the service.
We do not currently sell personal information. We do not currently share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, install advertising or cross-site marketing pixels on the website, or build advertising profiles about readers. As described above, newsletter email open and click engagement may be measured through Resend.
5. Your choices and privacy rights
- Email: use the unsubscribe link in any newsletter to stop marketing email. We may retain a suppression record so we can honor that choice.
- Referral cookie: you can clear or block cookies through your browser. Doing so may prevent referral credit from carrying through to signup.
- Theme storage: change the theme selector or clear local browser storage.
Browser privacy signals
Sent News does not use website analytics to follow readers across unrelated websites. Because our current practices do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, a legacy browser “Do Not Track” setting does not change how the website operates. We will honor legally recognized opt-out signals, such as Global Privacy Control, where they apply. Third parties may receive ordinary network information when your email client loads a remote image, when an article embed loads, or when you choose to follow an external link, and their practices are governed by their own policies.
Depending on where you live and subject to legal exceptions, you may have rights to know or access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a portable copy of certain personal information. You may also have a right to appeal our response and to receive equal service without discrimination for exercising a privacy right. Because we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, there is no sale or targeted-advertising opt-out needed for our current practices.
To make a request, email hello@mail.sent.news. We may need to verify that you control the relevant email address before completing a request. Authorized agents may submit requests where applicable law permits, subject to reasonable verification.
6. Retention
We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here, including providing the newsletter, maintaining security and audit history, honoring unsubscribes and suppressions, resolving disputes, and meeting legal obligations. The referral cookie expires after seven days. Retention by our service providers may follow their own documented schedules and legal obligations.
7. Security and international processing
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. No internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Sent News and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries, which may have different data-protection laws from where you live.
8. Children
Sent News is a general-audience business publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can review and delete it as appropriate.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Sent News or applicable requirements change. We will post the revised policy here and update the effective date. If a change materially affects how we use information already collected, we will provide additional notice when required by law.
10. Contact us
